BUILDING BRIDGES BETWEEN ART & JAZZ
The B12 Sextet is a jazz collective dedicated to transforming visual art into sound. Inspired by the Bauhaus artist Werner Jelinek, bandleader Moritz Beck composed a series of pieces in blues, fusion, and jazz, each reflecting the textures and structures of Jelinek’s striking collages. What began as a tribute evolved into a unique artistic dialogue between music and painting.
From Exhibition to Soundscape
The project was born in Galerie B12, a hidden cultural gem in Bottrop, where Jelinek’s works were exhibited from April to June 2023. Moved by the energy of his collages, Moritz set out to “melodize” the paintings, translating abstract visuals into expressive compositions. Supported by jazz-affine musicians from the Ruhr Valley, the B12 Sextet came to life as a collaborative fusion of art and contemporary jazz.
Live Performances
The B12 Sextet has performed in diverse settings, bringing their art-inspired jazz to a broad audience:
• Galerie B12 Vernissage – Premiering the compositions amidst Jelinek’s artwork
• Stadtfest Bottrop – Engaging a large audience with dynamic, jazz-infused performances
• Filmforum Studio Concert – Creating an intimate and immersive sound experience
The Sound of Bauhaus in Jazz
With a foundation in modern jazz, blues, and fusion, the B12 Sextet blends tradition with innovation, reinterpreting the spirit of Bauhaus through music. Whether in a gallery, festival, or concert hall, the band creates a multi-sensory experience, where visual art and jazz merge into one.
